Dear Ashkenazy Family Circle Members, With all the talk about immigrants lately, I feel compelled to write to you today. While I know you have all heard the stories of our family history, I want to share my thoughts about my father's journey to this country. When our grandparents fled from Russia, they were too poor to bring all of their children with them. So, they sent my father, who was 11 years old, to what they thought was a school in Czechoslovakia. There, his "guardians" put him to work on a factory farm. A boy with no money and nowhere to go, he was dependent upon corrupt strangers for his survival. He labored as a slave for the next eight years. Grandma and grandpa did not know that U. S. immigration laws would prevent their son from coming to America for so many years. Even with the help of the Red Cross, it took grandpa years to become a citizen and fulfill the requirements needed to bring my father here. Just days before his twentieth birthday, my father arrived in America. Years later, living the "American dream" in Brooklyn, New York, he didn't talk much about his childhood. But, I do remember him telling me about the only pants he wore for many years - made from a potato sack, and held up by a rope tied at the waist. Immigrant families still endure separations and incredible hardships to come to America for a better life. And, vulnerable children continue to be victims of slavery and exploitation throughout the world. It behooves us all to ask: how have times changed concerning the plight of immigrants today? I am grateful and proud to be the daughter of immigrants. Because of them we are privileged, and we should take a stand for those less fortunate than ourselves. Sincerely, Jane (Daughter of Zachary Sam Askenazy) |
